Security features of Umbria Network’s Narni Bridge

  • No front-facing websites connect to Umbria’s oracle service
  • Umbria’s oracle only performs events based on confirmed blockchain transactions
  • Umbria Network is audited by CertiK

In light of another high profile blockchain attack — this time BNB Smart Chain — it seems a pertinent time to have a quick recap about Umbria’s security features.

Umbria’s bridge oracle

Firstly, it’s important to understand our oracle. Umbria’s bridge oracle determines the finality of transactions on the underlying networks’ blockchain and sends users’ funds to their chosen destination network from the liquidity pools (go here to find out how it dramatically speeds up transactions).

The bridge oracle monitors activity on supported cryptocurrency networks by interfacing directly with multiple blockchain network nodes. It detects the Narni bridge transactions as they are confirmed on the underlying network’s blockchain and actions the necessary subsequent transactions to complete the user’s asset migration to the destination network.

Security is paramount

🔐 Our bridge oracle inherits the cryptographic security of the underlying blockchain network

🔐 It listens exclusively to network activity and honours the underlying network’s consensus mechanisms

🔐 It CANNOT be triggered externally and has no direct interface with users

🔐 The security of the bridge oracle is a consequence of its stand-alone architecture

Our bridge oracle inherits the cryptographic security of the underlying blockchain network. It listens exclusively to network activity and honours the underlying network’s consensus mechanisms. This part is very important: It CANNOT be triggered externally and has no direct interface with users. It DOES NOT accept messages from outside users. Instead it simply watches transactions arrive on the cryptocurrency networks and takes the appropriate action to finalise the bridging transaction.

It is extremely robust against malicious attacks primarily because it does not need to accept messages from anywhere except the trusted underlying network nodes. However, as an extra security precaution, it can be shut down rapidly in the event of an emergency. Ultimately, it can operate anywhere and be redeployed in a completely new location at any time.
